Condo Etiquette

Be a welcome member in any condo community!

Being a part of a close-knit community is one of the biggest attractions and advantages of condo living. It provides security and peace of mind to have neighbours who look out for each other. But, if some common ground rules aren’t followed and respected by everyone, the close proximity can turn to a disadvantage quickly. This isn’t common, as most condo owners know the expectations of condo living and are respectful of rules and by-laws, but if you’re thinking of moving into a condo, here are some things to consider when it comes to living in harmony with your neighbours.

The first rule is the golden rule

We’ve always been told to “treat others how you want to be treated”, and this holds true for condo living too. But the thinking is also expanded to include “act how you want others to act”.

Keep it clean

While most common areas are cared for and maintained, make sure you keep your own unit clean and clean up after yourself when you are in the common areas. This is especially important if you have kids or pets. And if you are a smoker, make sure you know where you can smoke.

Notice your noise

Be conscious of the noise you make, both in and outside of your unit at all times, but especially in the evening and early morning. Once you are and your neighbours get to know each other better you’ll know your schedules and can try to be accommodating when you can. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a party on your balcony or turn the volume up on your favourite song now and then. And if you are having a party tell your neighbours about it in advance so they won’t be surprised by the noise (or better yet, invite them).

Keep you and your neighbours safe

Keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour. If you have security gates or a buzzer, don’t buzz anyone in unless you know exactly who they are. Don’t let someone you don’t know into the building if they’re following you while you enter. When it comes to feeling safe and secure, being a part of a condo community is ‘strength in numbers’ defined.

Condo living offers a great lifestyle with great people. By following a few common-sense rules, you can make friends for life. If you’d like to explore some condo options, contact our team or browse our available units.
